Councillor to seek 1% enviro levy to boost coffers
TWEED Shire councillor Warren Polglase wants to investigate the introduction of a 1% environmental levy on rates as part of a bid to boost council's coffers from 2014-15.
Cr Polglase said the levy would raise half a million dollars to spend on environmental initiatives that would ordinarily be taken from the general fund freeing up more money to fix local roads.
Such a levy above the 3.4% capped rate would have to be approved by the NSW Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal, but Cr Polglase said the body had a track record of supporting such initiatives.
He said feedback from fellow councillors had also been positive.
"Council's got to start looking outside the square," he said.
He will ask for a report on the possible introduction of the levy at Thursday's meeting which kicks off at 4.30pm.
