Councils cook up holiday fun
SCHOOL holidays have arrived in Queensland (and almost in NSW) and the Gold Coast and Tweed are brimming with activities and entertainment.
In order to heighten the holiday spirit, libraries, councils and businesses have launched a plan of attack to ensure amusement for children and sanity for their parents.
The Richmond-Tweed Library Service is hosting a range of exciting activities including Story Dog sessions, the Gold Coast Titans under-20s representative team at Knox Park, drama and dress-ups and Junior Library Master Chef.
Larry Price from Kings- cliff Library said the master chef sessions would test the children's creativity in a fun and hands-on setting.
"The first class is the apron and mystery bag session," Mr Price said.
"The kids can decorate their apron and then they are given a mystery bag with four ingredients to cook with and there are prizes.
"In the second session the kids are taught how to cook from recipes. Bookings are essential for all school holiday activities."
Gold Coast City Council is also doing its part for parents by holding a fortnight full of free or low-cost activities.
Activities include surf lessons, skateboarding workshops, adventure challenges, animal care; stand-up paddle boarding, rugby league coaching clinics, dragon boating, zumba, tennis, retro games, craft and treasure hunts.
Community and Cultural Development chair, Councillor Bob La Castra said for the first time there were activities especially designed for young people with disabilities.
"Community feedback prompted the special disabilities program, which includes African drummingand dancing, cooking classes, horse care, kite making, kayaking and drama," Cr La Castra said.
Tweed City Shopping Centre is offering a free Yogi Bear show from Monday September 26 through Sto October 7 and an activity centre to keep kids busy these holidays.
