Countdown to Games: $5m to create world-class venue at Broadbeach

THE countdown has begun to the greatest show in the sport of lawn bowls and it’s all happening on the Gold Coast in just 24 months.

April 4, 2018 is the date for the Opening Ceremony of the XXI Commonwealth Games and Broadbeach Bowls Club is the host venue.

The first stage of the $5 million plus upgrade of the host club was completed last week and local club members were ecstatic to see their club transformed into a world-class venue.

The World Junior Championships commence at Broadbeach next Saturday, April 9, with juniors from 15 countries playing in the championships.

The world’s biggest festival of bowls, the Australian Open to be held in June, is also hosted by Broadbeach along with 15 other clubs in the district.

The Blue Diamond Pairs preceding the Australian Open on June 8 and 9 includes 10 teams from Scotland plus Australian squad members and a host of past and present elite players from across the nation.

These major events and the current influx of international bowlers will no doubt attract the best bowlers in the world over the next 24 months preceding the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Let the countdown begin.

The four-day Easter break was packed with tournaments and bowlers made the most of the holiday break.

South Tweed Bowls’ Good Friday Open Pairs was won by Bob Hinze and Scott De Jongh from John Bain and Ray Hickman with Bernie Lamberton and Derek Hopps in third place.

A top-class field filled the Country Classic Pairs at South Lismore on Friday and Saturday with locals Kit Conlan and Glen Pitts winning from Brendan Hoey and Steve Halmai. In third was Sean Ingham and Ryan Bester while Terry Knudson and Like Jones came in fourth. A total of 128 bowlers played over three days in the annual $10,000 Musgrave Hill Easter Open Singles, with 64 players playing four knockout rounds on Saturday, leaving four players in the draw, with the same on Sunday, leaving only eight bowlers for the final rounds on Monday.
