Elderly couple killed in horror crash from Waterview Heights

UPDATE, TUESDAY: THE elderly victims of yesterday's shocking crash on the Gwydir Highway were not far from home when they lost their lives.

Police have confirmed the man, aged 72, and woman, 75, lived at an address in Waterview Heights, about two kilometres from the scene of the crash.

They were travelling towards Grafton when their Hyundai crossed to the wrong side of the road and collided head-on with a prime mover.

A police investigation into the circumstances of the fatal crash continues.

EARLIER: TWO people have been killed in a head-on collision between a car and a truck on the Gwydir Highway, west of Grafton.

The road was closed in both directions for almost six hours yesterday as emergency services responded to the crash, which occurred near McLennan's Lane at Waterview Heights just after 10.30am.

NSW Ambulance Paramedics attempted to assist the male driver of the car and a female passenger, however, both died at the scene.

The victims are yet to be formally identified, although it is believed they were an elderly couple from the Clarence Valley.

The driver of the truck, a prime mover, suffered shock and was conveyed to hospital for treatment and mandatory testing.

Coffs/Clarence duty officer Bob Hansick said early investigations had established the Hyundai sedan was travelling towards Grafton when it crossed onto the incorrect side of the road, resulting in in the death of both occupants of the sedan.

The prime mover came to a stop nearby, in a paddock on the side of the highway.

The circumstances surrounding the impact are still under investigation.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

UPDATE 4.15PM: The Gwydir Highway has re-opened at Waterview near Grafton following a fatal crash involving a truck and a car.  

The highway had been closed in both directions while emergency services, including crash investigators, attended the accident site near Mclennans Lane.  

The diversions have now been lifted and traffic conditions are returning to normal in the area.

UPDATE 3.15PM: THE Gwydir Highway remains closed following a horrific crash which claimed the lives of two people near Grafton this morning.  

Diversions are in place for light vehicles, via Rogan Bridge Rd, but there is no diversion available for heavy vehicles.

UPDATE 11.30AM: TWO people have been killed in a head-on crash between a car and a truck on the Gwydir Highway west of Grafton.  

The deceased male driver and his female passenger were travelling in the car.  

NSW Ambulance Paramedics attempted to assist them, however both died at the scene.  

Both persons are yet to be formally identified.  

The driver of the truck was conveyed to hospital for treatment and mandatory testing.  

The crash happened about 10.35am, near McLennans Lane at Waterview Heights.  

Police, Fire and Rescue NSW, SES, paramedics and Rural Fire Service crews are on the scene.  

Police have said the highway will be closed for a number of hours as they wait from the Crash Investigation Unit to arrive from Ballina and then examine the scene.  

A detour is in place on Rogans Bridge Rd, but the road is unsuitable for heavy vehicles.  

Officers are also interviewing witnesses to the crash, and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
