Couple's secret is out

THE secret to Les and Marion Retschlag's marriage is laughter.

The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, just weeks after renewing their wedding vows on Valentine's Day.

The opportunity to say I do again came when Marion entered a radio competition with 4BC.

"I went online and they rang up and said you won," she said.

"I couldn't believe it."

They were joined by 30 other couples who also renewed their vows at Decks Seafood and Steak Restaurant in South Bank.

Les and Marion were married in 1962 at the Marburg Anglican Church, and have lived in Ipswich ever since.

While Les can't recall how he proposed to Marion, he said he had made sure he got permission.

"I asked her father, I know that much. In those days you had to, otherwise he would have brought out the shotgun," he said.

Marion said the couple's first date wasn't very romantic but was certainly memorable.

"He took me corn picking on our first date. It was scratchy and itchy."

However, Les thought differently.

"It was good exercise," he said.

Les was a coal miner for 28 years at Marburg when coal was $1.50 per tonne.

During this time, the couple opened the Tivoli butcher shop which they owned for 12 years.

"We had three jobs really," Marion said.

"On the weekends we sold watermelons. We'd put them in the back of the ute and take them to the coast where we sold them to people on the beaches."

"That was our beer money," Les said.

His tip for married couples is to never go to bed angry.

"Life's too short to argue," he said.

The couple's daughter had planned a surprise celebration for them on Saturday.
