The coward's punch: A family's life turned upside down

THE family of a young man attacked in circumstances that mirrored the king hit death of Thomas Kelly say their lives have been "irrevocably turned upside down".  

Daniel Christie, 18, was allegedly punched in the head while trying to break up a fight on the same Kings Cross corner where Thomas was hit in July last year.  

Daniel was fighting for his life at St Vincent's Hospital on Friday.  

"We don't agree with popular term king hit - we have heard it referred to as a coward punch which seems to be more appropriate," said a statement released by the family.  

"As a family we would like to express our enormous gratitude for the love and support we have received over the past few days.  

"We cannot express how grateful we are to the doctors and nursing staff and chaplaincy at St Vincent's Hospital as well as the NSW Police."  

A 26-year-old man has been charged over the assault and remains in custody.
