Crackdown on car thieves

THE Gold Coast had the highest rate of car theft in Queensland in the last year, with about four car thefts per day.

In response, the council has launched its annual campaign with 100 free car engine immobilisers to be given away to owners with vehicles at risk of theft.

Community and cultural development chairman Councillor Bob La Castra said older models manufactured before 2000 were most at risk.

"In 2010, there were 1570 cars stolen on the Gold Coast and 55% of those were manufactured prior to 2000," Cr La Castra said.

"We are all potential victims of car theft and one of the best ways to protect your car, particularly older models, is to install an immobiliser."

The council will partner with Queensland Police during February and March with an education campaign including displays at local shopping centres on ways people can help protect their cars.

"Many people may be unaware that cars get stolen from driveways and garages and it is important to take precautions even when their vehicle is parked at home," Cr La Castra said.

Car theft hot spots in the city are Southport, Surfers Paradise, Burleigh Heads, Palm Beach and Nerang.

The competition to win an immobiliser opens today and closes March 16.

To enter, phone 07 5581 6603 or email your name, address and phone number, along with your vehicle's make, model and year of manufacture to communitysafety@goldcoast.qld.gov.au

To be eligible to win an immobiliser, valued at $200, the entrant's vehicle must be manufactured before 2001.
