Son spots parents' stolen ute and gives chase

THE chance sighting of his parents' stolen ute led a Hervey Bay man on a dramatic car chase through Kawungan streets.

After recognising the dual-cab ute that had been reported stolen 24 hours earlier, Chad Delandre pursued the grey 2010 Ford Ranger from Boat Harbour Dr.

"I could not believe my eyes when I saw the vehicle," he said.

"After about two or three turns, he's realised I was following him."

Mr Delandre said the driver then reversed at full-speed for about 200m and lost control of the vehicle and hit a tree.

After a struggle with a damaged door, the driver dived over the bonnet of Mr Delandre's vehicle and ran through nearby yards to escape, jumping fences along the way.

Moments later, police arrived and apprehended a juvenile.

Sergeant Allan Douma said police charged a teen with eight charges following the incident, including unlawful use of a motor vehicle and trespassing charges.

The teen will face Hervey Bay Children's Court on February 28.
