Creating a caring council

TWEED Shire councillor Katie Milne wants to open council processes to the community.

Cr Milne made the comment yesterday after announcing her candidacy for a second term on the council.

Six candidates are on The Greens ticket.

Cr Milne, Joanna Gardner, Kirsten Ealand, Andrea Vickers, Michael Manley and Ian Willis are The Greens candidates for the election in September.

Cr Milne said opening workshops would take the council into a more modern, democratic direction.

That direction was one of four policies The Greens candidates were championing in the lead up to the election in September.

The other policies include:

Job creation through community friendly and sustainable town planning and support for farmers;

Opposing coal seam gas mining in the shire; and

Urgent action to save the Tweed's internationally significant environment.

"My hope is for a more progressive council with a fresh perspective and a more creative, caring and consultative leadership approach," Cr Milne said.

"With backgrounds including a range of small and big business, tourism and hospitality, health and education, environmental and marine management, the arts and agribusiness, we are able and ready to serve Tweed residents across the spectrum."
