Stolen car found in flames
AN illegal road trip from the ACT ended in flames in Tweed Heads on Wednesday night.
A new silver Mercedes, stolen eight days earlier from a suburb in Canberra, was found alight near Duranbah Beach.
Tweed Byron Police Sergeant Rob Taylor said police and Tweed Heads Fire Brigade attended a vehicle fire on Eden Street about 11pm on Wednesday.
“The vehicle had been stolen from a car yard at Fyshwick in ACT on May 4,” Sgt Taylor said.
Tweed Heads senior firefighter Gavin McDonald said the cause of the fire was suspicious.
“When we arrived about 11pm last (Wednesday) night the car was fully ablaze,” Mr McDonald said.
“We extinguished the fire promptly.”
Mr McDonald said the car, which had no registration plates, was damaged beyond repair.
No one has been charged over the incident.
Sgt Taylor appealed for anyone with information to contact the Tweed Heads Police Station on (07) 5536 0999 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
