Cruise back in time with new river tours

THERE'S a lot of history in the Tweed's waterways.

To mark the 150th anniversary of Tumbulgum's founding, an eco-tour company will reintroduce a boat for tours between the Tweed's oldest village and Murwillumbah.

Mount Warning Tours owner Michael Simmons said the tours between Tumbulgum jetty and Coolamon Cultural Centre would start in about four to six weeks, after the ferry, which was transported from Melbourne, was revamped.

Mr Simmons said the historic Huon pine interior would be maintained.

"We're really interested in the history side of it," he said.

"We think the heritage values of Murwillumbah and Tumbulgum are quite important.

"It's the type of vessel that would have been used on the Tweed many years ago.

"It'll be the first time in many years there's been a boat with that type of capacity able to operate on the Tweed River ... basically since the Condong bridge was put in."

He said the low-sitting ferry, which can carry 52 people, would glide under the bridge with ease to recreate a time when the river was the Tweed's highway.

"The Tweed, to me, is Australia's natural theme park," he said.

"It will provide an extra dimension to the river and we'll be able to work with existing Murwillumbah business such as the Riverview Hotel and Caldera Art Gallery." More info: mountwarningtours.com.au.
