Currumbin boardwalk crumbles after weather events

THE boardwalk along Currumbin Creek was severely damaged by flooding and storms earlier in the year and has still not been repaired.Gold Coast City Council has erected signs and barriers to stop people entering the walking path, parts of which have broken free from their foundations.

However, a Gold Coast council spokeswoman said it did not know when repairs would be undertaken.

"Council officers are presently assessing damage to the Currumbin boardwalk sustained during the severe weather connected with ex-tropical storm Oswald," she said.

"The extent of the repairs required is yet to be determined and at this time there is no reliable estimate for the cost of repair, replacement or removal."

"That said, Council is committed to ensuring any remedial work delivers value for ratepayers and a reasonable lifespan given the boardwalk's exposed location."

She also said that the council was still trying to find more information about the boardwalk's relevant history.

"The boardwalk is estimated to be 20 years old with information about its initial capital cost and funding source not readily available," she said.
