Lifeguard in near-drowning

A CURRUMBIN lifeguard has been airlifted to Gold Coast Hospital following a near-drowning at South Stradbroke Island today.

The man, 23, was surfing with friends when he was hit in the head by his surfboard and knocked unconscious.

Another surfer performed CPR on the lifeguard, who will remain in hospital under observation.

He is believed to have no spinal injuries.
