Currumbin vets attend to magpie shot with air rifle

IN A COWARDLY animal attack a magpie has been shot with an air pistol.

The bird was admitted into Currumbin Wildlife Hospital after it was found in Helensvale.

Vets say the bird was lucky to survive, because pallets missed all of its vital organs.

However, Senior Vet Michael Pine said the discovery of the pallets in the bird's body was shocking.

"Pretty much every animal that's brought in is due to a trauma caused by people.

"Most of it is accidental. But deliberate cruelty, with arrows and bullets, is so hard to understand. It's quite sickening," he said.

He said during the school holidays the hospital sees a spike in animal cruelty.
