Donor 'best IVF option for older women'

A LEADING Sunshine Coast IVF specialist says the best chance of having a baby at Lisa Curry's age is  through an egg donor.

IVF Sunshine Coast scientific director Ashley Stevenson said the chances of women giving "live birth" using their own eggs when aged over 50 were "so close to zero it's insignificant".

"We know that female fertility in Australia starts to decline at the age of 27-28," Mr Stevenson said.

"When people get to 35, their average fertility is half than what it was at 30. Then when you look at 40, it is halved again.

"The biological clock is very real for women."

Curry turned 51 on May 15.

New Idea magazine reports that Curry and her 31-year-old partner Joel Walkenhorst have visited an IVF doctor who said a "small chance" still existed to have a baby together.

She is believed to be pursuing a formal cycle of fertility treatment.

Mr Stevenson said 53 was the oldest age he was aware of for someone using their own eggs in an IVF birth.

"There is one case of this out of hundreds of thousands of IVF cycles," he said.

"The likelihood of someone at 51 using their own eggs is almost zero.

"That's why egg donation is more likely to get the outcome everyone is after.

"It yields on average healthy babies that will be well accepted by the family."

However, few donors were willing to offer their eggs to older women.

"The donor can determine the terms (who gets their eggs). I have never had a donor who has been prepared to donate eggs to someone more than 50.

"I have had a case where a woman who was 50 had a known donor and it has worked out very well for her."
