Couple turn lawn into veggie patch
ENVIRONMENTALLY savvy couple Peter and Iris Fisher have taken a giant step in making their home sustainable.
They have had solar hot water and a rainwater tank for some time, but recently employed new business Local Food Gardens to turn their entire lawn into a vegie patch and orchard.
Don Coyne and his partner Rebecca de Gail are avid horticulturalists who helped the couple turn their lawn into layers of compost, chook pellets, mulch and horse manure that will compost into a beautiful soil medium for a vegie patch in spring and summer.
Mr Coyne said the gardens were about turning high maintenance lawn into a sustainable food source that is maintained for you each month.
We “come back and maintain and nurture it every month, but the cost of that is offset by what they save on going to the shops or farmers market,” Mr Coyne said.
“What they don't eat they enjoy giving to friends, family or neighbours.
“We design, build and maintain food gardens for people.
“It's about food miles, low impact, sustainable farming.
“Lawns require lots of maintenance so we figured, if you don't need it, turn it into something productive.
“As they spend quite a lot each week on fruit and vegetables now that prices are going up, they want to plant what they use most,” Mr Coyne said.
“This includes bok choy, English spinach, broccoli and cauliflower as a start.
“They already have pineapple, banana, galangal, basil and tomato going.”
