Cute Sweet Things is a mouth-watering passion
AFTER running a hotel for many years with husband Alasdair, Bernice Camlin decided to have a go at cake making and loved it so much she started Cute Sweet Things three years ago.
Fast-forward to the present and Mrs Camlin is one of the best specialty cake makers in the business, capable of making almost anything her clients ask of her.
"Some projects I have taken on I was not sure if I could do it at all, but I have not failed at one yet," Mrs Camlin said.
One of her favourites was a life size R2D2 cake for a 40-year-old Star Wars fan.
"That cake was a month in the making and planning, but challenging projects like that are my favourite; it's a satisfying feeling finishing a big project like that," Mrs Camlin said as she put the finishing touches on a couple of cup cakes in her Pottsville kitchen.
Markets like the ones in Pottsville are a big part of Mrs Camlin's business; she sells out regularly and takes many orders from her stall.
"The Pottsville markets keep the orders coming and of course word of mouth works well," Mrs Camlin said.
Also a painter and photographer, when Mrs Camlin gets into something she goes all the way with it and does not do things by halves, according to her husband.
"Once she gets into something she has to do it at the highest level possible, high quality and doing it right is what she is about," Mr Camlin said.
Birthday and wedding cakes are the biggest source of work for Cute Sweet Things, custom-making cakes in the shape of planes, cartoon characters and anything else the client might want.
There is a new trend in cake making called candy pops which are little individual cakes with a hard chocolate coating, often presented on a stick.
"Cake pops or candy melts are the craze at the moment.
"They are very time consuming and involve a chocolate exterior with a soft cake interior," Mrs Camlin said.
"They are very popular for weddings. People want something different now so they have a wedding cake and then a lolly table with things like the candy melts on them."
Nothing seems impossible to this cake- making phenomenon, perhaps her clients' imagination the only thing stopping the next crazy cake idea.
