Daffodil Day cancer care

FLASHES of bright yellow around Tweed and the Gold Coast today are a timely reminder the community is pulling together to fight cancer.

Today marks the 25th anniversary of Daffodil Day in Australia.

As the largest national fundraising event of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, Daffodil Day raises essential funds for cancer research, prevention and support services.

The daffodil is the international symbol of hope for all those touched by cancer.

This year Daffodil Day aims to raise more than $9.5 million to fund the cancer control initiatives, patient support and research services of cancer.

A spokeswoman from the Far North Coast Cancer Council said many Tweed businesses and support groups have put their hands up to support this worthy cause.

“Bunnings and Suncorp in Tweed Heads and the Tweed Hospital are just some of the places that are involved in Daffodil Day,” the spokeswoman said.

One in two Australians will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85, and cancer is a leading cause of death in Australia, with more than 43,000 people estimated to have died from cancer in 2010.

Tweed and Gold Coast residents can support the Cancer Council today by purchasing any of the Daffodil Day merchandise including the pens, lapel pins, key rings and of course bunches of fresh daffodils.
