Damp conditions inspire termites
TWEED homeowners need to watch closely for an influx of creepy crawlies with last week's rain creating perfect warm and damp conditions for termites and cockroaches.
Tweed Heads South Amalgamated Pest Control has been inundated with calls in the last five days from residents reporting termites in their homes.
Area manager Trevor Bathie said summer was the best time of year for an annual pest inspection.
"Termites love moisture," Mr Bathie said.
"Some people we saw have water through the walls, they were pulling off pieces of gyprock and finding huge mudding trails."
And don't think you're not at risk, no home is completely termite-proof.
"All homes are susceptible," Mr Bathie said.
"Even if you have steel framing you're still at risk because of the wooden skirtings.
"People can look out for mudding trails through weep holes but most of the time they're impossible to detect, they come up through the ground.
"It's a good idea to get an inspection after rain like this."
