Dangerous storm warning issued by Bureau of Meteorology

UPDATE: The Bureau of Meteorology has updated its severe thunderstorm warning, telling  residents of Springbrook, Numinbah Valley and the area south of Cunungra to be ready for strong winds and hail by 5.50pm DST (4.50pm QLD). 

The full text of the warning, posted to www.bom.gov.au, was as follows:

 

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 4:20 pm, very dangerous thunderstorms were detected on weather radar near the McPherson Range, Lamington National Park and the NSW border. These thunderstorms are moving towards the northeast. Very dangerous thunderstorms are forecast to affect Springbrook, Numinbah Valley and the area south of Canungra by 4:50 pm and Little Nerang Dam by 5:20 pm.

Destructive winds and very large hailstones are likely.

 

Emergency Management Queensland advises that people should: 
* Move your car under cover or away from trees. 
* Secure loose outdoor items. 
* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees. 
* Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm. 
* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines. 
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500. 

 

The next warning is due to be issued by 5:15 pm.

A more general severe thunderstorm warning is also current for the Gulf Country, Northwest and parts of the Peninsula, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, Central Highlands and Coalfields, Central West, Darling Downs and Granite Belt and Southeast Coast districts.

 

EARLIER: THE Bureau of Meteorology has issued a warning for a dangerous storm that could affect Coolangatta.

A warning issued by the bureau at 4.47pm DST (3.47pm QLD) described the story as "very dangerous".

The storm was south-east of Rathdowney and was moving slowly north east.

The storm is expected to induce strong winds and damaging hailstones.

It was expected to affect areas around Springbrook around 5.20pm DST (4.20pm QLD).

An updated warning was expected to be issued at 5.50pm DST.
