Daughter finds her dad after 25 years
JASON Heilbronn has 25 years of catching up to do with the daughter he never knew he had.
The Bundaberg man recently found out he is the father of Victoria woman Jess Hahn, who tracked him down via Facebook to question him about his paternity.
Mr Heilbronn, who was completely unaware of Ms Hahn's existence until last month, said he had been on an emotional roller-coaster of a journey.
"I've been surprised, confused, angry and extremely happy," he said.
"I am really excited - I just can't wait to get over there to meet her."
Mr Heilbronn said the Facebook message he received from his daughter in July asked about who he dated 26 years ago.
"Jess asked if I had dated her mother, which I had for about three months. The next message that came through said: 'I think I might be your daughter'," he said.
"I was freaked out a little bit at first. I was really surprised and didn't know what to think so I asked if I could call her."
"She then sent me photos that looked a lot like me so I thought there is a good chance this is real."
After communicating back and forth via Facebook and phone calls, the duo decided to get a DNA test done which confirmed Mr Heilbronn's probability of paternity as 99.9995%.
Ms Hahn said she originally found out about her real father after an argument with her mother.
"The person that I have always thought was my father isn't," she said.
"In a moment of frustration, my mother blurted out that Jason is in fact my father so my partner and I decided to look him up on Facebook to find out more."
"I am so glad we did because this has given closure to the three of us because the man who I had always believed was my dad always had uncertainty in the back of his mind about me."
Ms Hahn, who has two children and another on the way, said she felt content knowing that she had found answers.
"I was shocked that my mother had kept it from me from so long," she said.
"Now I just feel relieved that everything is out there."
Mr Heilbronn, who has two children to another woman, said he couldn't wait to welcome Jess into the family.
"My kids have a sister and I have grandchildren. I am so happy and excited," he said.
Mr Heilbronn is on a pension and is currently looking to gain funds to help him get to Victoria to meet his daughter.
