Record ride a weighty issue

DURING his record-breaking cycle around Australia, former Alstonville man Dave Alley burnt so many calories that he needed to eat four times the amount of those in his support crew.

But when you force yourself to cover 377km a day for almost 38 days, losing weight is inevitable.

At his lightest during the marathon journey, Alley weighed only 63kg.

His determination never wavered throughout the 14,251km journey.

Alley smashed the record by more than three days when he crossed the finish line at Woody Point in Brisbane.

The record had been set by Canadian Perry Stone 11 years ago when he completed the trip in 41 days five minutes.

Along with shedding a lot of kilograms, the trip challenged Alley in so many ways.

"The most difficult parts were crossing the Nullarbor and then the south coast of NSW," Alley's manager Dave Lees said.

"He rode into strong headwinds both times. On the south coast he had severe stomach cramps and at one stage had to stop every 15 minutes.

"But he showed a lot of determination to fight through it all. He was on the bike from 15 to 22 hours a day.

"It was a phenomenal effort."

Incredibly, Alley got through the trip uninjured.

"There was some shoulder and knee soreness but that was about it," Lees said.

The 35-year-old, who lives at Redcliffe in Queensland, aimed to raise $20,000 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

The balance so far is just over $15,000.

He decided to embark on the record attempt after a life-changing experience in 2006 when his twins were born prematurely and almost died.
