Davis targets 400

BRAD Davis might also get his kicks from champagne, but we know he really gets a buzz out of steering rugby league balls between the uprights.

And over the cross-bar, of course.

It is something the veteran playmaker has done in Intrust Cup Rugby League for the Seagulls since he linked with the club in 2005.

The Little General gets the opportunity tomorrow – and sure as eggs is eggs, he will – to knock over his 400th goal in the competition, making him only the third player in the history of the competition to have exceeded that magical mark.

The undefeated Seagulls line up for their 12th win on the trot against the improving Souths Logan on their home track out at Piggabeen Sports Complex. The action starts at 3pm.

Only Burleigh’s Nick Parfitt (471 goals) and former Redcliffe Dolphin Greg Bourke (403) have surpassed 400 goals.

There might be added pressure when Davis moves in to put boot to ball for his history-making attempt but that is something the wily halfback has handled with ease during his illustrious career in big-time football.

Davis’ deft goal-kicking is icing to the cake for the Seagulls – his football and leadership skills have been invaluable during the club’s rise to become a powerhouse in the second-tier Queensland competition.

The Seagulls are flying this year and only a foolish man would tip their unbeaten run to come to end despite facing a rejuvenated Souths Logan, which goes into tomorrow’s fixture on the back of a resounding 40-0 win over Norths Devils in round 11.

Leading the Seagulls out to do battle tomorrow will be hard-working second-rower Ryan Simpkins, who will be running on for his 50th Intrust Cup game for the black and whites.

Souths Logan and the Seagulls have met 18 times in cup competition, with honours evenly divided. Both will be primed to get their necks in front tomorrow.

Seagulls coach Ben Anderson has made a couple of changes to his run-on team following last week’s injury to star fullback Shannon Walker.

Walker is sidelined this week with a hamstring problem but Anderson is in the fortunate position of being able to slot the versatile Ryan Milligan into the custodian role.

Replacing Milligan on the wing this week will be young Brad Lees, who has been promoted from the Byrcroft Cup team following a string of solid performances.

Anderson has retained Kayne Lawton at hooker despite the return to ranks of Tim Maccan.
