Daylight robbery as Spieth takes No. 1 spot from Jason Day

JASON Day's stint as world No.1 lasted just one week as American Jordan Spieth reclaimed the top spot after winning the Tour Championship and the lucrative FedEx Cup.

The victory capped a breakout year for the 22-year-old Texan who won five tournaments, including the Masters and US Open. He also set a new PGA Tour money record of $A17.1 million in a single season, not to mention the $14 million bonus he pocketed for winning the FedEx Cup.

The prizemoney he earned for winning the Tour Championship, plus the FedEx Cup bonus, was more than double the amount 18-time major winner Jack Nicklaus earned in his entire career.

Day was unable to replicate the form that saw him win four events in the past seven weeks, shooting a final-round two-under-par 68 to finish in a tie for 10th, seven shots behind Spieth.

The result saw him slip to third on the FedEx Cup points table, giving him a $2.8m bonus on top of the $325,000 tournament prizemoney. The Aussie said it had still been a "good, positive year" despite the disappointing finish.

The other Australian to make the field of 30 for the season-ending event was fellow Queenslander Steven Bowditch. The Byron Nelson Classic winner finished in a tie for 12th at even par, picking up $279,000 on top of his FedEx Cup bonus of $320,000 for finishing 20th on the points table.
