Ipswich student raises the bar in bodybuilding competition

HE'S only been competing for a year, but already Declan Wiseman has tasted success in his bodybuilding career.

The 17-year-old St Edmund's College student recently won first place in the Australasian Natural Bodybuilding Under 30 Male Fitness Model competition.

It is impressive considering that Declan was up against others that have probably been bodybuilding for at least a decade.

He first became interested in bodybuilding at a younger age, where he liked the physique, symmetry and proportions associated with sculpting a body.

Whilst he loved the muscle side of it, he didn't know as much about the diet side, which is arguably just as important. After researching the diet required, Declan began working out regularly when he was 13 years old.

He currently trains at View Fitness at the top of town, and credits his coach, Marian Leonard from Body Boutique, with helping him manage diet and exercise.

He works out five days a week, every week, and is studying for a Certificate 3 and 4 in personal training.

Even more astonishing is the fact that he eats seven meals a day - even during the off-season.

When he was announced as the winner Declan was overwhelmed and happy with the result. He has advice for anyone hoping to start out in bodybuilding.

"You need to have a good gym, a good coach, research, and get your diet right," he said. "Bodybuilding is 60% in the kitchen, and 40% in weights."

Declan goes to Nationals down in Sydney in a fortnight, and will continue to build up his muscles for next year's season.
