Axed Magpie gets a second chance

DELISTED Collingwood big man Lachlan Keeffe has been thrown an AFL lifeline by GWS.

Keeffe, 27, has signed with the Giants as a delisted free agent after being axed by the Magpies last month.

The 204cm big man failed to play a senior game this year after missing two seasons - 2015 and 2016 - with a drugs ban.

Keeffe and now-former teammate Josh Thomas were suspended after testing positive to banned drug clenbuterol.

The Queenslander will add some much-needed depth to the Giants' tall stocks after the retirement of ruckman Shane Mumford, however, the athletic Keeffe has played his best football at AFL level in defence.

He played mostly up forward for Collingwood's VFL team this season and spent some time in the ruck as the Magpies searched for more support for young forward Darcy Moore.

Keeffe could fill a back-up role at the Giants behind likely No.1 ruckman Rory Lobb while spending time either forward or back.

But his versatility means he can also boost the Giants' key position defensive stocks behind co-captain Phil Davis, Adam Tomlinson, Aidan Corr and Nick Haynes.

Dawson Simpson and developing big man Matthew Flynn are also at coach Leon Cameron's disposal as back-up ruck options.

The new Giant becomes the third player to be thrown a lifeline since the delisted free agency period opened on Monday, after axed Kangaroo Aaron Mullett joined Carlton and former Bomber Alex Morgan joined North Melbourne.

Stewart Crameri, Billy Hartung, Michael Talia, Sharrod Wellingham and Jack Trengove are among the experienced players still looking for a second chance.
