Fundraiser for Packy’s kids
ORGANISERS of a memorial dinner for Andrew “Packy” Turnbull hope to raise $25,000 for his seven children.
Friends of the popular Kingscliff firefighter who died after battling a grass fire last month have formed a committee to host the fundraiser at Cudgen Leagues Club on Friday, November 27.
Mr Turnbull passed away after battling a grass fire at Fingal Head on Friday October 16.
He was 35 years old.
He leaves behind children Aubrey, 20, Corey, 16, Christopher, 15, Benjamin, 13, Marcus, 8, Kaleb, 5, and his youngest, Kiara, who is only one year old.
More than 1500 mourners gathered at the Cudgen Leagues Club on Saturday, October 24 for his funeral, where Mr Turnbull was given full fire-fighter honours.
Committee member Jenny Jones said the Kingscliff community is still in mourning with Mr Turnbull’s family and friends.
“These seven children have just lost their father and Christmas is coming up,” Ms Jones said.
“It will be an extremely difficult time for them already; we just want to help them get through it.”
Several local schools willalso be raising money for thefamily through their own initiatives.
“We’re looking for some guest speakers to be there on the night, but we haven’t had much luck yet,” Ms Jones said.
“We would love to hear from the community if they can help us organise anyone.”
The committee is also appealing to local businesses to help with donations which can be auctioned off on the night.
“I’ve written to the Parramatta Eels hoping they can help us out. They were Packy’s favourite team,” she said.
A memorial touch football match is also being organised for Cudgen Leagues’ Family Christmas Day on Sunday, December 6 to help raisefunds.
“We’re hoping to get teams to pay to play on the day so we can donate the money to the children,” Ms Jones said.
THE Sportsman’s dinner fundraiser for Mr Turnbull’s children will be on Friday November 27 at 7pm NSW time at the Cudgen Leagues Club. Tickets are $100 per person and include a drinks package, dinner and entertainment.
