Diving into the deep blue river from afar

DIVERS from across south-east Queensland are flocking to the Tweed River, attracted by its clear waters and ease of access.

Brisbane Dive Academy owner Mick Wheatley has been bringing divers to Jack Evans Boat Harbour several times a week for more than seven years.

"It's a great little training location, nice and easy access down the rock wall there are some steps in there,” Mr Wheatley said.

"There is also a wide variety of marine life out there as well. Just during the week we took some great photos of a turtle that was just cruising around in the rock wall there.

"On Friday night we were just cruising around and there was dolphins and all sorts of stuff out there playing around with us. It is just a really great training location.”

Mr Wheatley's is one of two dive companies that use the Tweed River as a training location on a regular basis, with many of his clients tourists, eager to complete their various Padi courses.

Mr Wheatley said the water was generally clear and blue, apart from times immediately following heavy rains.

"We don't dive in the Brisbane River, there are too many sharks,” he said.
