Do something: volunteer 30 seconds of your time

THIS is National Volunteer Week and to mark it the DoSomething charity is asking Australians to volunteer just 30 seconds of their time.

In that 30 seconds, all people have to do is visit DoSomethingNearYou.com.au and type in their postcode.

By doing that, they'll be given a wide range of volunteering opportunities that they can get involved with in their local community - not just in National Volunteer Week - but at any time of the year that suits them.

The DoSomethingNearYou website makes it far easier for people to get involved in local community organisations and community events.

The website lists local contact details for the Salvos, Vinnies, Red Cross, the SES, the Rural Fire Service, Meals on Wheels, the Smith Family, Rotary, Lions, Scouts, Guides, Men's Sheds, Surf Life Saving Clubs, CWA, VIEW, Neighbourhood Watch, RSPCA shelters and much more.

Hundreds of major community and fundraising events are also listed.

Commander of Point Danger Marine Rescue Bernie Gabriel said volunteers were the backbone of the organisation.

"We greatly appreciate our volunteers," he said.

"They are the solid core of the organisation."
