Dodgers send baseball World Series to decider

BASEBALL: Los Angeles and the Houston Astros are heading to a decisive Game 7 in the 2017 World Series after the Dodgers drew level at three games apiece.

The Dodgers finally got to Houston starting pitcher Justin Verlander, recording a 3-1 win in Game 6 in Los Angeles on Wednesday. Game 7 will be played from 11am Thursday (Australian time).

Verlander restricted the Dodgers to just one hit and recorded eight strikeouts through five innings but the home side broke out in the sixth inning of Game 6.

A double from Chris Taylor down the right field line saw the scores tied at 1-1 after Houston's George Springer had hit a home run in the third inning to start the scoreboard ticking over.

A sacrifice fly from Corey Seager added another run after which Verlander was pulled but a home run from Joc Pederson in the bottom of the seventh extended the margin to 3-1.

Houston stranded two base runners against Kenta Maeda in the top of the seventh inning before Kenley Jansen came in and recorded six straight outs in the eighth and ninth innings.

Dodgers starting pitcher Rich Hill was taken out after facing a two-out, bases-loaded jam in the top of the fifth inning and with the Game 5 hero for the Astros, Alex Bregman, up at bat.

But relief pitcher Brandon Morrow got Bregman to ground out to escape and keep the score at 1-0 Houston.

The Dodgers are seeking a seventh championship and their first since 1988, while the Astros have never won a World Series.

Since 1985, teams heading home down 3-2 in the playoffs win the series half the time (14 of 28). When they win Game 6 - as Los Angeles did on Wednesday - those teams are 14-2 in Game 7.
