Dolphins earn tie

A SOLID second-innings dig by the Gold Coast Dolphins may not have been enough to prevent a rare Queensland Premier Grade cricket tie against Toombul at the weekend, but was invaluable for a side that has struggled to score runs this season.

The Dolphins could only manage 133 runs in their first innings at Kerrydale but inspired bowling performances from the Dolphins' attack had Toombul out for the same score.

Chillingham teenager Corey McMahon (2-23) opened the bowling with Dave Heavyside (2-25) and cleaned up four of the opening five batsmen before they reached double figures.

Another youngster Billy Stanlake (2-29) was able to take the valuable wicket of Chris Sabburg (60) who was the only Toombul batsman to make a serious impact on the scorecard.

From there, Brad Ipson and Daniel Doran were able to clean up the tail.

Coach Wallace was impressed with McMahon's spell.

"He bowled exceptionally well and took a couple of very valuable wickets," Wallace said.

McMahon, an Australian under-19 representative, works hard on his game and is only going to improve with age, Wallace said.

"He is a strong young lad who can swing the ball. He has a lot to offer and just needs to work on his consistency."

Wallace can't remember being involved in a tied game of cricket.

"It is unfortunate 10 points went begging, but these things happen and at least we didn't lose the game," he said.

"We're not performing as a batting group at the moment, we definitely need to turn that around and that started on Sunday when a couple of guys got some good scores."

Wallace was looking forward to the return of opener Andrew Robinson from Queensland Bulls selection, to strengthen the Dolphins' top order.
