Domestic violence COAG's first agenda item for 2015
DOMESTIC violence will be the "most urgent matter" when the nation's top inter-government body meets later this year, Prime Minister Tony Abbott said Wednesday.
Mr Abbott told reporters there was an "abundance of goodwill" to tackle the issue, championed by Australian of the Year Rosie Batty.
He said he would put it on top of the Council of Australian Governments agenda for its next meeting, and hoped a national domestic violence order system was agreed before year's end.
"I think we've got to light a fire under it and that's why this will be a specific COAG agenda item," Mr Abbott said.
A national system would mean that a DVO taken out against an offender in one state would apply across state borders, so victims could escape the "domestic persecution" in their home, he said.
