Terminal cancer patient Donna makes plea to Treasurer

CANCER sufferer Donna Penny has written an emotional plea to Federal Treasurer Chris Bowen in the hope he will take action regarding her super payout.

Since Mrs Penny's story appeared in the Sunshine Coast Daily last week many people - including two Sunshine Coast Federal MPs and the Department of Human Services - have offered to take up her fight.

But all advice appears to indicate the only person who can make the change which will allow her super fund, HESTA, to give her access to her super and illness benefits is Mr Bowen.

Mr Bowen's office sent the Daily a response late yesterday saying he could not intervene.

"The Treasurer is of course very sympathetic to Mrs Penny's situation," a spokesman said.

"However, under current law there is no discretion to intervene in these cases and no decision has been made to review the legislation."

In her letter, Mrs Penny spells out her distressing situation.

"My oncologist and my GP have advised that my breast cancer is now terminal and the average life expectancy for someone with my condition is 30 months.''

She outlines the mounting bills the family is struggling to meet since she gave up work to spend more time with her seven-year-old son.
