Council prioritises Tweed gravel roads for sealing

THE "dangerous" gravel road at Round Mountain, inland from Hastings Point, is to be sealed.

But other shire residents living on unsealed roads shouldn't hold their breath for similar work.

Tweed Shire Councillors have voted 4-2 to prioritise each of the gravel roads in the shire that need sealing "in the future".

But Tweed Shire Council's director of engineering and operations, Patrick Knight, said the prospect of all roads being sealed was "pure fantasy" as it was too costly.

Mr Knight said it was difficult for council to balance the road needs of the urban and rural population.

He said the Round Mountain work could be fast-tracked if landowners affected by the works donated their land.

Cr Gary Bagnall said Round Mountain, as a key connecting road, should be prioritised as the road was "extremely dangerous ... with a huge drop down the side of it."

He said additional roads in need of sealing should also be done in order of priority.

But Cr Phil Youngblutt said people were buying homes on a gravel road and then expecting it to be bitumened.

"They bought there with that road and that's what they have to live with," Cr Youngblutt said.

Cr Warren Polglase said fixing Round Mountain means council's budget is drained on a single road.
