Jennifer Hawkins: not just dressing to impress
WHEN it comes to spring racing fashion, Jennifer Hawkins leads the pack. The seasoned fashion filly and face of Myer reveals her style tricks and trend insights ahead of Melbourne Cup - and why comfort needn't always trump style when the stakes are high.
What are the key spring racewear trends to look out for this year?
Bell sleeves, luxurious lace, tailored silhouettes, sheer details, colourful accessories and neutral pumps.
What's your favourite look and how can we achieve it?
One of my favourite looks would have to be a '70s blow dry, a feminine tailored dress with lace or a bell sleeve, wide brim hat, beautiful point and statement sunglasses.
What are your race day style tips to stand out from the crowd?
Keep your outfit chic and race appropriate. For me, it's not about standing out, it's about feeling confident, feminine and enjoying the day with friends. If you are noticed for your stylish outfit then that's lovely too. My outfit is organised well in advance so I don't worry on the day. My tip for anyone heading to the races would be to do the same so you are calm on the day and can enjoy the atmosphere.
Do you choose the dress or the fascinator first?
My outfit, shoes, then hat or headpiece.
How do you stay comfortable trackside?
That's a hard one because I love sexy high pumps, and they are not comfortable. So beyond my shoes, I get lots of sleep the night before and after my work is complete, I have a martini and let my hair down with friends and the Myer team. Dancing and laughter are the key: you forget that your feet are killing you.
And not to forget the guys. Do you have any fashion advice for the men?
A tailored suit is a must and invest in some fashionable shoes and sunglasses. For a healthy glow on the face, they could use a light coat of Jbronze mousse to give them a natural tan (no one will know, boys). And I won't say to have a shave because I'm into stubble.
What's your favourite memory of Melbourne Cup?
Derby/Cup 2013 and Spring racing week 2014 would have to be my absolute favourites. Jake came to Derby/Cup 2013 after we were married in June that year so I guess it's high on my favourites list. I was wearing a leather Toni M outfit, the Myer marquee dance floor was insanely good. Spring racing week 2014 was also amazing...the Myer marquee was the place to be. I got to have a punt and hang with the team so it was a special week also.
Jennifer is wearing By Johnny Tie Clash dress, $350 with a Kerrie Stanley headpiece (KSMBJ03), $499, available at Myer. Stockists: 1800 811 611 or http://www.myer.com.au
