'Don't tell Mum': Teen raped step-sister for nine years

A NEWLY blended family became the stuff of nightmares for an eight-year-old girl who was subjected to years of rape and abuse at the hands of her step-brother.

Facing Maroochydore District Court now as a 33-year-old father-of-three, her abuser - who can't be named - pleaded guilty to 10 child sex offences committed when he was aged 14 to 23.

These included five counts of rape, three counts of indecent treatment of a child under 12 and one count of maintaining a sexual relationship with a child.

It began when he, his brother and father moved into his victim's family home after a relationship between the children's parents began.

Often left in charge of his two step-sisters and step-brother when their parents were out of the home, the then 14-year-old used his trust against the girls to touch their vaginas.

Then when his primary victim was aged 10, he raped her for the first time.

He would go on to rape the girl a further four times - often causing her to bleed - until she was aged 16 and their parent's relationship broke-up.

On one occasion, he forced the girl to touch his penis under a sheet while her mother was nearby.

It wasn't until 2011 after joining the Australian Defence Force that the woman came forward and reported the abuse.

She gave evidence to police in 2013 and her abuser was arrested in 2015.

Defence barrister Simone Bain argued in her client's defence there were no threats of violence against the victim and there has been a 10-year gap in his criminal history.

Judge Brian Devereaux contended it was difficult to sentence the man as the offending began when he was an adolescent, but continued for five years one he was an adult.

Mr Devereaux handed the man a head sentence of five years with a parole eligibility date of August 10, 2019.
