Double demerits apply as Tweed cops hit the road

POLICE have put Tweed residents on alert that if they speed this Easter, they'll cop double demerit points.

It's part of a NSW state-wide blitz also focusing on seatbelt and motorcycle helmet offences.

Police have urged motorists to "avoid becoming a statistic" this Easter, with road tolls already up from last year.

Across the border, Queensland police began their Easter road safety campaign last weekend, with hopes of maintaining the state's record low road toll.

Coolangatta's acting Senior Sergeant Steve Quinn said he would like to see motorists being patient over the Easter break.

"It's expected there'll be an increased amount of motorists over this period," Sgt Quinn said.

"We ask that motorists take care, pay attention and be patient."
