Mur'bah court: No excuses for a draining crime
A CRYSTAL Creek groundsman referred to his theft of eight cement drains from the Tweed Regional Museum worksite as "a stupid spur of the moment thing".
"I don't have an excuse," 46-year-old Ian Bruce Lasker said, pleading guilty to the $4000 larceny in Murwillumbah Court on Wednesday.
"I'm embarrassed it happened."
Magistrate Michael Dakin's response was scathing.
"You had the time to think about this as you carried the goods to your truck," he said.
"You have no prior record, but it was quite deliberate behaviour on your part."
After drinking at nearby premises on November 16, Lasker slipped through a gap in the worksite fence, on the corner of Queensland Rd and Bent St, about 8pm, carrying the drain structures to his vehicle.
Police were notified and Lasker made a full admission after they visited his home and noticed the drains propped up against a shed. Due in part to what the magistrate described as genuine contrition and remorse, Lasker was only fined $500.
