IT is that time of year again when the Tweed is lit up with Christmas lights.

One of the biggest displays of Christmas cheers comes from David and Marilyn White who spent about seven weeks setting up about 120,000 lights across about five acres on their property in Stokers Siding.

Mr White said this was the biggest year to date.

"We had about 100,000 to 102,000 last year," he said.

The White's use the Christmas lights event to raise money for charity. Last year about 1400 people visited the gardens.

"Besides creating something to brighten the Christmas spirit, we also collect voluntary donations to the Murwillumbah Children's Leukaemia / Cancer Research Society," he said.

"We have erected the light display each Christmas, since arriving from Sydney, in 2007 and following offers to pay monies toward power, my wife came up with the idea of donations the cause two years ago and we have so far raised almost $3000.

Although the family try to change the display every year, Mr White said other factors had to be considered.

"It's become more about colour coordination," he said.

The lights will remain on from 8pm to 10pm until January 3 with the public invited to visit the property.
