Drive safe or face double trouble
POLICE will be out in force on both sides of the border over the Queen's Birthday long weekend.
NSW drivers can expect to be hit with double demerit points for all speeding, seat belt and motorcycle helmet offences Friday through until Monday.
During last year's Operation Stay Alert campaign, four people were killed on NSW roads.
NSW Police deputy commissioner Nick Kaldas wants motorists to focus on the basics, slowing down and driving to conditions.
"In our busy day-to-day lives we can sometimes forget what the main focus is when driving," he said.
"When we start out and get our licence, we are alert to what is happening while driving, what the speed limit is and what the weather conditions are like.
"This needs to be in the forefront of our minds.
"One death is one too many."
Although Queensland drivers won't be hit with double demerits, police north of the border are tasking extra police to focus on the fatal four.
The State Traffic Task Force and the Roadside Drug Testing Unit will be targeting drivers that are speeding, not wearing a seat belt, drink and drug driving or driving fatigued.
One person died on a Queensland road over the long weekend last year.
"If you are travelling long distances... stop and revive at least every two hours," Superintendent Andy Morrow said.
"Expect a higher-than-usual volume of traffic on the roads this weekend and allow extra travel time.
"Think carefully about your own driving behaviour not only this weekend but every time you get behind the wheel."
Almost 153,000 breath tests were conducted, 383 drivers were charged with drink driving, 4,460 were issued infringements for speeding and 7,369 other offences were detected during the long weekend operation last year in NSW alone.
