Driver spreads love in community

VOLUNTEERING Gold Coast has some amazing people within its transport services who volunteer their time to help others.

One such person is John Love, who joined Volunteering Gold Coast as a driver.

After retiring he needed something to do with his time.

What he didn't know was just how much he would get out of giving back to the community.

"I dedicated my life to teaching but when I started volunteering I realised that the people I was helping were teaching me things about myself and the world that I never knew," Mr Love said.

Transport Services helps keep individuals living independently by providing them with transport options to get to appointments, shopping centres, libraries and community events.

The services are looking for volunteer drivers to join the team, one or two days a week between 7:30am and 3:30pm.

"We need more drivers to lend a helping hand," said Loren Tier from Volunteering Gold Coast.

"Anyone with a drivers licence, clean record and friendly personality that wants to give their time to the community and meet some fantastic people should definitely apply.

"We supply the cars or mini buses for the drivers to drive and organise a schedule of people for them to pick up and drop off."

"All our drivers have to do is meet and greet the passengers and take them to and from their destination" Volunteering GC's Emma Trapski said.

Volunteering Gold Coast provides support to all their volunteer drivers which includes training such as senior first aid, driver training, a blue card and federal police check.

All that is required is a standard driver's license and Volunteering Gold Coast will assist you to obtain a Qld Transport Driver Authorisation.

"The benefits of being a volunteer are immense," said Mr Love.

"I receive great training, gratitude off the customers daily and have met some great people from with the Transport Services team.

"I would definitely recommend volunteering to anyone looking for something to do."
