MORE than pride will be on the line when The Bilambil Jets and Currumbin clash in the Gold Coast Tweed Rugby League competition on Saturday.

The clubs will be playing off for the annual Curtis Finn Memorial Trophy, named in memory of promising Tweed Indigenous footballer Curtis Finn, who tragically passed away in 2009.

Finn played his junior football with Bilambil, before progressing into senior ranks with Currumbin and Bilambil president Ryan Helton said the club would rise for the clash, in memory of a fellow player and friend who meant so much to both clubs.

“One hundred per cent we’ll lift for it,” Helton said.

“There’s been a lot of talk at training and the boys know how much it means to everyone.

“Even though it’s been seven years, we’ve still got players in our club who’ve played with and against Curtis, so he’s still fresh in their memories and the new boys understand his importance.”

Helton said the Finn family was incredibly supportive of the memorial match, which this year falls close to the anniversary of Finn’s death on June 17, 2009.

The day will support local charity Livin who work with the community to help wipe out the stigma of mental illness and raise awareness for suicide prevention.

“In consultation with the family, Livin was nominated for the game and recently came on-board,” Helton said.

This is the eighth clash between the two clubs for the Finn memorial Cup, with Currumbin holding the edge 4-3 over Bilambil.

Helton said injured players had pencilled the clash in for a return, as taking part in the game meant so much to them.

The day gets underway at Bilambil Sports Complex at 11am with an under-19s clash, followed by a reserves clash and the Finn Memorial match at 2pm.

The game was originally to be played on June 5, but had to be postponed due to bad weather.
