Education on teen pregnancy needed for kids in grade 7

SOON-to-be grandmother Bobbie Moore will support her pregnant teenage daughter all the way.

The Rockhampton mother of three's youngest teenage daughter is pregnant, studying at high school, and expecting her first child early in 2014.

Bobbie said giving birth was a scary experience for her.

That's why she believes expecting young mums would benefit from knowing not only what support was available, but also extra education on the issue in schools.

She thought many teenage mums didn't fully understand what they were faced with.

Bobbie said she believed her daughter was unaware of what services were available for teenage mums and thought she would benefit from them.

"It really is a big burden to have a child at a young age," said Bobbie, who had her first child at 21.

"She could benefit from knowing which services are out there as it's a lot to deal with at a young age."

She said she would give her daughter all the support she needed.

I would never turn my back on her, never ever," she said. "But she does have to realise that it is her child and that she has to step up and be a mum."

She believed more needed to be done in schools so young people knew the full consequences of having sex.

"They really need to put more emphasis on educating young people from grade seven up," she said.

"Teenagers need to know what can happen if they have sex at a young age, and fall pregnant, and the life changing experience it is."
