Sea Eagles survive second-half surge
AN electric first half was enough to see the Sea Eagles hold off a second-half surge to beat the Titans 38-20 at Brookvale Oval yesterday.
The hosts scored five tries in the first stanza to lead 24-10, with Brett Stewart, David Williams, Jamie Lyon, Steve Matai and Jamie Buhrer crossing.
Lyon's try opened up a 16-4 lead after 26 minutes, with Daly Cherry-Evans going to the line and passing to Stewart, before the fullback threw a classy no-look pass for Lyon to finish.
The hosts were not done there, with Matai grubbering for himself and regathering, before beating David Mead to score after 32 minutes.
Buhrer scored two minutes later from a Kieran Foran short ball.
But the Titans rallied in the second half, with tries to Kevin Gordon (52nd minute) and Aidan Sezer (64th).
Gordon leapt high to ground a lovely Albert Kelly kick, and Sezer ran the length of the field to see his team trail 28-20.
The Sea Eagles then wrestled their way back into the contest and were rewarded with two late tries to Nick Skinner and Jorge Taufua.
Taufua knocked back a nice Foran kick before Skinner finished off the movement, before the powerful winger backed up a Brenton Lawrence break to put his name on the scoreboard.
