Elite surfing back at Burleigh

BURLEIGH Heads is back on the professional surfing calendar, with the famous break to play host to a qualifying series (QS) event.

Surfing Queensland has announced that the Scoot Burleigh Pro will get underway Friday with the finals to be held Sunday.

Burleigh was previously the site of the Gold Coast's only QS event, the Breaka Pro, but the continuing downtrend in the surfing industry and ongoing impact of the GFC forced the sponsors to abandon the event after Owen Wright claimed the crown in 2013.

Since then, Surfing Queensland has been working hard to secure a new sponsorship deal and their efforts have now been rewarded.

"We're excited to be able to put an event of this magnitude back on the point at Burleigh Heads and I'm looking forward to seeing some of the best surfers in the world compete at what is a world-class location," Surfing Queensland CEO Adam Yates said.

"This is a great opportunity for local surfers wanting to prove themselves at an elite level."

The home of the famous "Burleigh Barrel", Burleigh offers a natural amphitheatre that provides a perfect venue for spectators looking to take in the action for free.

While it is a great location to watch the surf, my tip is to find a car park early.

The new event is sure to draw an elite field with surfers using it as a warm-up ahead of the Quiksilver Pro and Roxy Pro WSL events at Snapper Rocks.

The waiting period for the World Tour events will stretch from February 27 to March 8.

The world governing body of pro surfing, formerly the Association of Surfing Professionals has had a makeover in the off-season and has been rebranded. It is now known as the World Surf League (WSL).

The Scoot Burleigh Pro is a WSL QS 1000-rated event with both men and women's divisions.

It will have a prizemoney pool of $15,000 up for grabs and will be the first QS event on the 2015 Australian surfing calendar.

It's a great opportunity for local Gold and Tweed coast surfers to win some cash and put points on the board for a possible chance to qualify for the WSL tour.
