Elliot denies breach as Electoral Commission launches review
THE NSW Electoral Commission is to undertake a "preliminary review and assessment" of claims that local Federal MP Justine Elliot has breached state electoral funding laws.
It comes after National Party state director Thomas Aubert reported Mrs Elliot to the commission alleging her advertisements in local newspapers during the NSW state election campaign, including the Tweed Daily News, had breached state electoral funding laws.
In a statement, Nationals state director Ben Franklin said the party was alleging Mrs Elliot's ads potentially breached the third-party campaigners rule in the act.
But Mrs Elliot said it was "a desperate lie by the National Party" and said she would not be silenced.
"The National Party are trying to silence me as I fight for our community in the campaign to stop coal seam gas mining," she said.
"I will always stand up for locals against the National Party's cruel and unfair policies that are hurting our community."
