Elliot disappointed Rudd did not contest leadership
RICHMOND MP Justine Elliot has spoken out in support of Kevin Rudd in the wake of yesterday's Labor party leadership challenge.
Simon Crean called for a showdown and a spill of all Labor party positions. However, the spill did not happen because Mr Rudd refused to contest the leadership.
"Locals know that I've been a supporter of Kevin Rudd for a long while," Mrs Elliot said.
"I'm very disappointed that Kevin chose not to run for the Labor leadership.
"Kevin's a man of his word and he said that he wouldn't challenge for the leadership."
Greens candidate for the seat of Richmond in the upcoming federal election Dawn Walker said Labor was "distracted by factional in-fighting."
"Richmond deserves a representative that is focused on the community," she said.
Ms Walker attended Harmony Day events at Murwillumbah Community Centre yesterday.
"This is a local celebration promoting respect, fairness and a sense of belonging for everyone," she said
"What a contrast to this (yesterday afternoon's) in-fighting by the Labor party over its leadership.""It's quite clear that only the Greens are united and committed to taking up the fight to Tony Abbott at this year's federal election."
Ms Gillard is expected to make an announcement in Tweed Heads tomorrow morning.
