Elliot to Fraser: I look forward to debating you
RICHMOND MP Justine Elliot has labelled National's candidate Matthew Fraser's argument that there is no coal seam gas on the Tweed as "misinformation" and accused him of insulting the public.
She also responded to his call for a debate, saying she would contest him at a later date.
"I look forward to debating Matthew Fraser during the election campaign," she said.
"He can then explain to locals why he supports harmful coal seam gas mining.
"The reason that CSG companies have licences covering the North Coast is because they want to drill for CSG here."
Furthermore, Mrs Elliot said that the National Party was ignoring the concerns of Tweed residents.
"Locals won't be fooled by Matthew Fraser and the National Party," she said.
What we see here is the National Party is doing the bidding of CSG companies while ignoring the concerns of locals."
Mrs Elliot said that Mr Fraser supported coal seam gas mining, despite the Nationals candidate previously stating that he did not believe there was any CSG in the Richmond electorate.
"Matthew Fraser's misinformation campaign in support of CSG insults the thousands of locals who've marched in the streets against CSG and it insults the thousands of locals who've signed petitions against CSG mining," she said.
"In contrast, I stand with our community and we do not support any form of CSG mining here on the North Coast."
Mrs Elliot has called on Mr Fraser to pay the $1000 to charity that he promised if she could show where commercially viable amounts of coal seam gas were located.
Mr Fraser has said that he would be happy to pay up, but believes Mrs Elliot still has not met the terms of the deal.
