School's anger at energy drinks

THE consumption of energy drinks has caused concern in Gold Coast schools.

Burleigh Heads State School principal Peter Tong spoke out against the drinks in the May 12 school newsletter.

“In the past week we have had some instances of students bringing energy drinks to school, which is concerning, as these are not recommended for children,” the newsletter article read.

“These appear to be purchased prior to school and most likely without their parents' knowledge. I ask that parents be vigilant with their children's spending habits before and after school.

“I will be visiting the upper-grade students in the next few days to advise them energy drinks are not to be brought to school.”

Education Queensland executive director Sharon Mullins said parents were primarily responsible for the drinks their children took to school.

“Energy drinks are listed in Smart Choices as a “Red” category item, which means their supply should be limited in schools due to their minimal nutritional value,” Ms Mullins said.

“Principals are responsible for the implementation and monitoring of Smart Choices at their own school.”

Gold Coast dietician Amanda Clark said children should not be consuming the drinks.

“The thing about energy drinks is that the full amount of caffeine is not listed on the can,” Ms Clark said.

“The amount of caffeine in the guarana is not taken into consideration, because they vary just like any plant.

“I would recommend that kids do not drink energy drinks.”
