Eugenie Bouchard: 'give us a twirl' request 'funny'

GIVE us a twirl, girl.

It's the sort of cringe-worthy request that don't expect to see as part of tennis coverage on television in 2015.

But after   seventh-seed Eugenie Bouchard wrapped up her 6-0, 6-3 victory at the Australian Open on Wednesday, her on-court interviewer asked her to do exactly that.

"Can you give us a twirl and tell us about your outfit?" asked commentator Ian Cohen.

Referring to world No.1 and top seed Serena Williams, he said, "She was kind enough to give us a twirl ... "

"A twirl?" replied Bouchard.

To which Mr Cohen responded, "A twirl, a pirouette, here we go."

Bouchard fulfilled the request, before laughing and burying her face in her hands.

Fairfax reported it was one of Bouchard's own tweets about Serena Williams that appeared to prompt the presenter's question, as he drew links between the neon hues of their on-court attire.

She later described the incident as "very unexpected", CBC Sports reported.

"I don't know, an old guy asking you to twirl. It was funny," she is reported to have said.

Tennis fans on social media were less than impressed.

Beverly Akerman wrote: "He should be fired: this is not how you treat a world class athlete. Imagine the response from a 6 ft. 5 in North American football player to something so inane. (He'd) been lucky not to get punched."

But Mick George wrote: "He should lose his livelihood because the woman he's being paid to speak to tweeted that she loved another tennis player's outfit & so invited her to show the outfit off? You don't think that you might just be overreacting a tad?"

"Read many tweets from male tennis players admiring each other's 'outfits'?"
